Tori Amos Rides the Bus

Tori Amos Sony is trying their damnedest to commercialize Tori Amos. This picture says it all.

No matter how much this record company tries to whore Tori out to the mass audience, it won’t work…its been proven time and time again that the pop audience doesn’t get her, at least to the extent that die-hard fans do. And I would venture to guess that most of us Tori fans like it that way.

Came across this blog the other day written by a disillusioned Tori fan who snapped a camera phone picture of a Tori ad hitching a ride on the back of an LA bus. The blogger asked Tori “How low have you gone?” Fair enough. It would appear that the indy piano-playing redheaded genius crooner has gone all corny bus decal on us.

In Tori’s defense, I doubt this was her idea. Sony has been all about commercializing Tori lately, probably because they are disappointed in album sales. They’ve plastered Google Adsense all over her official site, purchased Adwords, and ticket prices are atrocious. This bus ad is just another one of their zany schemes to make more money off of her. Something tells me that Tori’s opinion was not solicited when it came to mass transit advertising strategies.

This blogger (Coverly), who was obviously a Tori fan once upon a time, was confused about Tori Amos’ apparent Cher makeover (see pic above!). I’ll offer a brief explanation for the fellow blogger and all others who aren’t quite sure whats going on with Tori these days. Tori puts it much more eloquently, so if you want a more thorough description check out my Tori Appearances and Tori Press/Articles sections.

In a nutshell, Tori’s wears wigs to distinguish five different characters who represent 5 different sides of the feminine. Tori asserts that today’s society has segregated women from various parts of themselves and this album represents a reintegration of sorts. One of the five characters is “Tori.” In the bus photo she is dressed as a sort of exaggerated representation of herself…hence the really, really red wig. A really, really red Cher-like wig.

Its an art rock thing, what can I say?

Hope this post has reignited someone’s Tori Amos fandom, or at least piqued a curiosity. The album that the bus ad was promoting is called American Doll Posse. Its brilliant, I promise. No covers of Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves.

  1. Yeh, deffo not T’s idea… I keep on wonering if ADP will be her last album with Epic, I really hope so. Atlantic was horrible, but Epic is just UGH.

  2. I don’t think she needs any of them. I think her and Mark could do it on their own! Thanks again for the comments!
