Denver Post: This is How you Advertise a Tori Amos Show
I’ve been giving journalists a lot of crap these days…especially those who feel it necessary to actually put a negative Tori Amos concert review anywhere in print. Not to say they have to like her…but they at least have to try to understand the American Doll Posse concept. Afterall, she’s explained it 100 ways from Sunday. Whats not to get?
But this guy Ricardo Baca, a music critic for the Denver Post, makes it all better. By way of announcing Tori’s arrival in his beautiful city, Mr. Baca recounts the exact moment he fell in love with Tori Amos. In a nutshell, a young choirboy version of Ricardo was hanging out in a hotel room with some choir buddies when one brilliant fellow decided to turn everyone on to a little album known as Under the Pink. Baca describes what it was like listening to each successive track, from Pretty Good Year on, and admits he actually began adoring Tori when “track 8″ came on…which we all know is the brilliant Cornflake Girl.
From then on, Baca turns to describing Tori’s successful career using his story as a springboard. He uses wonderful adjectives (i.e. “bizarrely addictive”) and similes (i.e. her sensual singing voice was like one elegant, elongated breath”) to describe Tori’s musical styling. In choosing this architecture for his article, Baca truly connects with the Tori Amos community. We all have a moment like this…a similar story to tell, and we love hearing each other’s “Tori Stories.” This article even has something for people who have yet to love Tori. Mr. Baca is no doubt influential in the Denver musical community and that he personalized Tori’s upcoming show means he used his power for good. Maybe those who have always been curious about Tori actually bought a ticket…and converted.
Job well done, Mr. Baca! Very well done.
