Syndey Review–Tori an “Acquired” Taste?
For a music journalist who doesn’t claim to be a huge Tori fan, Kelsey Munro at least tried to give a good review of Tori’s latest stage performance…although it appeared the writer was perhaps a bit too distracted by Tori’s wig collection.
To summarize, Munro likens Tori to other high-intensity female performers with unique vocal and musical stylings (i.e. Ani Difranco, Kate Bush)–those kind of women you tend to either love intesensly or love to hate. Everyone has to give props to Tori for being able to garner such a huge, devoted fan base, as the writer says, impressed that Tori sold out three nights worth of shows in one city.
Tori’s writhing, brazen, rubber-wearin’ alter ego Pip graced the stage during this performance, and Munro was a bit turned off. However, the writer obviously understood that Pip is an exaggeration of the more “in-your-face” side of Tori. Pip’s wig reminded the Munro a bit too much of the Spinal Tap character to take her too seriously, though. In a hit a bit below the belt, Munroe made a “Little Mermaid” reference to one of Tori’s other wigs.
The writer admits that Tori’s skills with the piano (and the piano/keyboard combo) are remarkable, as are her vocal talents–if only Tori would use more restraint? Hm. To close, Munro alluded to the length of the set list and the fact that fans clamor for oldies but goodies like “Hey Jupiter” and “Precious Things.” In the end, Tori remains simply “an acquired taste” in the eyes of this reviewer.
For a reviewer who has a hard time liking Tori, this wasn’t too terrible of a review. I could have seen (him? her?) going further with the wig jokes and choosing different, more piercing words than “lack of restraint.” Just sounds like another great Tori performance from this angle!

Hi Brooke
Thanks heaps for the really supportive comment you left on my blog post re my life issues surrounding my Tori concert experiences!
Don’t be too jealous; I only got to see her 1st and 3rd concerts in Sydney (Pip and Clyde), not all 3. I read the review you’re meta-reviewing here and was sooooo angry that they’d sent some hack music journalist to the concert who wasn’t conversant with the back catalogue of an artist of such stature as Tori Amos.
My sister actually lied to her work about family commitments to get an early flight up to Brisbane to see her in Santa mode.
I’m still overwhelmed by the whole experience and my passion for Tori’s music has been well and truly re-stoked after kinda missing out on Scarlet’s Walk and The Beekeeper coz I was in a deep, extended depression.
Anyway I’ll stop raving!
Love and Peace!
Hey ManicBoy!
Here here about being overwhelmed. This tour sure does pack a punch! The cool thing is that you get to go back and enjoy SW and TBK like they are new albums. So you get THREE new albums this year! You have to find the silver lining somewhere… Hang in there, and never apologize for raving when it comes to Tori Amos, he he he
