Tori Amos Plays Brisbane: A Review in Pubs and Clubs

Santa came onstage at the Brisbane showNothing starts the morning like a big ol’ cup of coffee and a Tori Amos concert review sitting in your inbox.

Today’s edition of Australia’s “Pubs and Clubs” boasted a positive (albeit short) review of Tori Amos’ live performance in Brisbane this weekend. The answer to everyone’s first question: It was the liberated, cocktail-wielding Santa who graced the stage during the first set of the show. The platinum-bobbed chanteuse belted out American Doll Posse tunes like Body and Soul, Dragon, and Secret Spell.

Santa sauntered off the stage and passed the baton to the headliner: Tori Amos. The reviewer appeared impressed with the “alter-ego” concept…often, journalists who’ve yet to be captivated by Tori are put off, confused, or otherwise not impressed with the costume changes (see the Sydney review). Lisa Tasson, however, did not seemed phased as the crowd obviously drank the dramatics like water. Tori delighted the audience with Big Wheel, Digital Ghost, Precious Things, Hotel, and Code Red. Oh, and Silent All These Years, of course.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated moments of any live Tori performance are the short, but well-composed and hilarious improvisations she plays in between songs. This time, Tori cracked up her audience with a Tash story. According to Tasson, little Natashya had asked her mommy what a “homo” was and if Tori would still love her if she were a “homo.” Tori had responded along the lines of, “You got yourself a good Mommy, Tash, because I believe in homo-spirituality.”

To close, the reviewer reported that she show went on for close to two hours, that Tori provided two encores which included a tender-rendition of Hey Jupiter, and that she was sure the audience would feel the impact of this intense performance throughout their week. All in all, another kudo for Tori in the eyes of the critics.
