How Tori Amos Smokes the Competition

Concept albums or bust. Its a quickie post…saving my energies for manana…planning to write a longish one, giving thanks to the Goddess.

Ran across this quote today in a blog post at browardpalmbeach.com:

“[Little Earthquakes] is a diary form, I would say – a journal. But you really can only write your journal once, in my opinion. I think you can maybe write it twice. But you need to have a lot of time lapse before you write the second one.” ~Tori Amos

Just let that sit for a second :)

How many popular musicians actually follow this system? Folksingers have it right…but not many others. I thought of 10 musicians off of the top of my head who have written at least 3 “diary” albums if not more (Alanis Morrisette stands at the top of that list, but I ain’t hatin’ on Alanis. Love her…but still). Most song writers only have their diary and above and beyond that, they hit a brick wall. Not Tori…she has Russian Tsarina’s, Greek Goddesses, first ladies, boys in diners eating lemon pie, the government, Lucifer, and all of us Ears with Feet to help her out in the inspiration department. She is not a self-centered musician. There is a whole world of stories to tell, and Tori Amos aims to tell as many as she can while she is here on the planet.

Genius. Pure multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, no-wonder-we-all-flock-to-her, never-grow-tired-of-her genius. Concept albums or bust.

Strange thought, I know. But with the Grammy’s coming up (as well as the certainty of Tori Amos not winning one) I am a bit bitter. Can’t stand it when pop stars so not even near Tori’s league get all the love. I do prefer her underground (as my friend Jenn does) but I still get bothered.

  1. yeah, I totally agree with you ))

  2. There is no human-made award good enough for Tori - especially the Grammy award - they give those things out like candy - and when I see the types that are given a Grammy - I’m glad that an artist like Tori doesn’t even enter their minds because they could not begin to appreciate what her music is - pure art and absolute masterpieces. Tori’s awards for her music are the devout legion of fans - like us, who buy everything related to her, have life changing experiences because of her music, and who visit websites devoted to her over ten times a day just to see what new information has popped up. Tori is a legend and the people who need to know this know it. However, I do believe that one day, possibly not in Tori’s time - when people have pulled their heads out of their asses and begin to appreciate home made heart felt music, the whole world will know and respect the Hammer of the Goddess :)

  3. Thanks Anastasia!

    Jenn…I hear THAT!

I remember on one awards show circa the choirgirl era when Tori presented an award (I think this was the MTV awards) to Vanessa Carlton for best new artist or something like that. And when Vanessa Carlton accepted the award from Tori she gave her one of those insincere hugs and then promptly turned toward the microphone to give her silly thank you speech. UGH! This pissed me off for DAYS because…Yo, Vanessa baby, this woman paved the way for your crooning piano-playing ass and you pretty much owe your success to her (at least to some extent) and you don’t even acknowledge it when SHE presents YOU an award? What is WRONG with people? Yep, Jenn, stuck up their own asses is the right way to put it!
