More Thoughts on Purple People

Tori Amos…hey, I’m on a kick, what can I say?

Fellow ‘Glow friend Borneoman (who is getting a lot YouForAWhile shout-outs lately!) pointed out that Purple People may also be about Tori feeling a bit drained by us Ears with Feet.

Borneoman postulates that Tori may be describing her mixed feelings toward us…that she lives to tour but that she wishes she could take a break every now and then without disappointing us. He (BM, pardon me for assuming your gender) refers to the following lines:

Thunder wishes it could be the snow = Tori wanting to take a break from being a tour de force, instead wanting to be calm like, well, the snow.
One thing she always promises is a show = Pretty self-explanatory from this angle.

A restaurant that never has to close = She is “on” almost 24/7, especially during tour season.

An angel’s face is tricky to wear constantly = T. does get frustrated, tired, and needs to look out for herself from time to time but she feels like she can’t or she’ll let us down.

A little mental yoga will they disappear? = If she meditates hard enough, can she tune out all of the pressure of being the spiritual leader that she is?

It is eye-opening, and does make me feel guilty…for a second. And then I remember that Tori is a very smart woman, one who has sought to liberate herself from certain unnamed record labels so that she could give us what she wanted to give us, that she has said countless times that she lives to play live, and that she has put her foot down as of late, saying she is going to “slow down” her tour schedule a bit next go ’round. Well, I think it is safe to say that, while she may feel overwhelmed by us from time to time (which is understandable) she adores us, appreciates us, and doesn’t mind making us happy with her work.

Great interp! Doncha think? Makes a lot of sense to me. And this is exactly why I love Tori Amos. We can take one song and interpret it from 239,239 angles. From the trials and tribulations of mental illness to a star’s plea for personal space, Tori does it all in a 3 minute, beautifully composed masterpiece.
