Tori Amos Song Interpretation Update: Northern Lad

Tori Amos, Northern LadJust finished Northern Lad.

For all the talk about the meaning of this song, I didn’t spend much time talking about the beautiful the melody or how emotionally raw Tori sounds when she is singing it. You can actually hear venom when when she says “f**king” cold. And the “because of’s” at the end of the song are right on target and so fraught with pain and angst that its difficult not to tear up when you hear it.

I didn’t add this part to my “China2Ny” spiel, because its only a fledgling idea…but Tori has commented in several interviews that when Mark proposed, he asked her to stay in England–that he did not want to live in the States. Tori conceded (especially because they kept her home in the states), but I always sense a little twinge of “I wish he didn’t ask me to do that”-ness when she speaks of it. Is it just me? And its not just her complaining about England’s weather. This makes me wonder whether the person she is “trying” to be in Northern Lad is someone who is very, very happy to leave the US and live in England. But, deep down she misses the states more than she lets on. Not to say (AT ALL) that Tori is not happy in marriage. But there are sacrifices you make to remain in a relationship and sometimes you wish you didn’t have to make them. It usually balances out though.  In my experience.
