Tori Amos Song Interpretation Update: Playboy Mommy

Playboy Mommy's done! And its about FREAKIN’ time, I know :)

And the funny thing is–Playboy Mommy really needs no explanation or interpretation. The song hits you in the gut like a ton of bricks with its obviousness. But, hey, it have me a chance to say my 500-word piece on one of my favorite Tori Amos songs (shout out to the A Piano version though. Geez…what a powerful three minutes!).

Like Spark, whenever I hear Playboy Mommy it takes me back in time to when I first purchased Choirgirl (the day it came out) and listened to the album from beginning to end 10 times in a row. The excitement of a new Tori album added to the closeness I felt to her after I had listened several times strengthened my fanhood by 1000 points, tons, times, touchdowns…whatever the hell units you measure fanhood by. And I’m sure I’m not the only one!

As always, I don’t claim to know everything and all things about any on Tori Amos song. But I try to give a rough outline to newbie fans and open it up for discussion amongst more seasoned Toriphiles. So, comment away!

Up next…Pandora’s Aquarium.

  1. Hello!

I noticed you wrote about Tori Amos in your blog and thought you’d be interested in this new story about Tori collaborating with comic book artists.. here is all the information: http://www.toriamos.com/news/tori-amos-inks-comic-book-tattoo

Let me know what you think!

  2. Thanks, Margot! I’ll do my research and write a thought or two (or a thousand!) next week :)

  3. Playboy Mommy makes me teary almost every time I hear it. I didn’t discover it until recently, and I have two daughters. So when Tori sings “those angels can’t ever take my place” I can feel exactly what she means. When you lose a child, or miscarry, people will tell you the child is in a better place. But as a mother you know no one will ever love that baby the way you do. So sad.

  4. I totally agree, Bea! That line hits me like a ton of bricks. What a wordsmith she is…
