Agent Orange
Music and Lyrics by: Tori Amos
Instrumentation: Vocals, Acoustic Piano (Bosendorfer)
Brief Summary: Upon lamenting for the men in her life in Not the Red Baron, Tori conveniently placed “Agent Orange” (a song meant to conjure up a ridiculous image of an orang-ey muscle man) to represent the war that still waged within her due to the end of the relationship, despite the fact that healing had begun.
Tori’s Comments: “But you know that sadness when you know your relationship is over and you’re still alive? You know you’re not dead–you’ve got all your body parts. You’re all there and you’ve got a date. He’s got a new love….and you go on with it.”
Fan Comments/Interpretations: There is a definite “war” theme in Agent Orange, that Tori says represents the war that continue to rage between the couple and within themselves despite the fact that they’ve begun to move on. Fans have tried to decipher why exactly Tori chose Agent Orange (the chemical used during the Vietnam War), other than its obvious connection to war. Some have speculated that “palm oil” refers to napalm, another chemical weapon.
China2Ny’s Comments: Another fun one to sing!
