Putting the Damage On
Music and Lyrics by: Tori Amos
Instrumentation: Vocal, Acoustic Piano (Bosendorfer), Brass Band
Brief Summary: At this point in the story, Tori is trying to move on but she feels herself falling apart a little every times she sees him. She is trying to keep a stiff lip (Angie Dickinson was an actress known for keeping her composure in intense situations), but its hard…she’s wishing for her best impression…but doesn’t necessarily pull it off. While she is saddened to watch him move on with this pale-legged woman, there is an element of being happy for him. She can wish him well although she’s still a mess. This is the beginning of the healing process…and Tori reminds us that healing hurts too.
Tori’s Comments: “Damage was so essential for me to sing. Its one of the most difficult ones for me. I can look and have love and feelings for some of these people but…”
Fan Comments/Interpretations: Most fans are tuned into the sadness in this song–some say its about a woman who can’t help loving a man who is totally wrong for her. Others suggest that it is about loving a soldier (someone who kills but still has the capacity to love). Interestingly, one fan suggested that this song is about “those guys” that put their baggage on display in order to attract women…who will care for and fix them.
China2Ny’s Comments: A genius composition, Putting the Damage On is a great ending to this story. Tori’s emotions really come through in this ballad…we’ve traveled a long road with her and she delivers in the end.
