God
Music and Lyrics by: Tori Amos
Instrumentation: Vocals, Acoustic Piano, Bass, Drums, Percussion, Guitars, Keyboard Programming
Brief Summary: A minister’s daughter, Tori Amos never runs low on religious commentary. In “God” Tori asks the big man upstairs why he let’s crappy things happen…where is he when innocent people suffer? Off enjoying himself in other ways? (She sometimes refers to God getting a blowjob, although it may be thickly veiled in the line “I gotta find why you always go when the wind blows.”) Perhaps, she suggests, he needs a woman to look after him to make sure he keeps his priorities straight.
Tori’s Comments: (from the Under the Pink songbook) “Lemons and burnt oranges would come barreling down the skyway on the draw if the dark gray cats didn’t open up and let those girls twirl in their fluffy new dresses”
Fan Comments/Interpretations: Many fans agree with the above interpretation, or rely on comments Tori has made about this song in press. However, some interpret God to be her father or some other male authority figure who she very much looked up to, but who let her down in some fundamental way.
China2Ny’s Comments: God is a great song, and I particularly enjoy the live versions of it (i.e. Still Orbiting). This video is amazing too…one of my favorites. Something about Tori handling hurling that snake around makes me smile.
