The Waitress
Music and Lyrics by: Tori Amos
Instrumentation: Vocal, Acoustic Piano, Drums, Bass, Keyboard Programming.
Brief Summary: Waitress is one of the “why do women hate other women so much” songs on Under the Pink. In this song, Tori gets absolutely enraged at another woman…wanting to absolutely destroy her. We don’t know exactly what this woman did to piss Tori off, but she did. And Tori is livid, but she is taken aback by her own emotions…Tori believing herself to be a fairly laid-back, peaceful person. Hence the paradoxical (and oh-so-genius) refrain, “But I believe in peace, Bitch.”
Tori’s Comments: (from the Under the Pink songbook) “Condiments are my favorite thing. Sometimes when I was lonely I’d line up all the condiments and pound them on the table and let them applaud me, adding confidence to my dishes before they got cooked.”
Fan Comments/Interpretations: Fans agree that The Waitress is a great, in-your-face, I-hate-you kind of song. The waitress gives us all a chance to be angry and vengeful, and not feel guilty about it. Because good people get pissed off too.
China2Ny’s Comments: If you’re having a bad day, get an mp3 of Tori’s “Hang Ten” version of The Waitress and play it over and over again. It may make your day worse, but you may just wear yourself out enough so as to make all of your woes go away.
