The Wrong Band

Music and Lyrics by: Tori Amos

Instrumentation: Acoustic Piano, Vocals, Hammond Organ, Arp String Ensemble

Tori AmosBrief Summary: In “The Wrong Band” Tori tells the story of a prostitute she used to know who, um, hung out around powerful men in D.C. and fled to Japan for her safety when she started knowing more than she should about corrupt political forces. Heidi Fleiss reminded Tori of this girl (its why she was inspired to write the song), hence “Heidi” in the song.

Tori’s Comments: (from the Under the Pink songbook) “Orchards are simple…a peach tree says ’some of me will be juicy and some of me will be dry, I’m not growing for you I grow because thats what I do.’ You always hear some person complain about how dry their peach is and the peach says ‘it’s not our fault you have no understanding on the proper use for dry peaches.”

Fan Comments/Interpretations: Other than the “this is a story about a prostitute friend of Tori’s” angle, some fans have written that The Wrong Band is simply about trying to get out of a bad situation when the cards are stacked against you.

China2Ny’s Comments: The Wrong Band is a fun song (I say that alot, don’t I?) But it is. Again, the content isn’t so much fun…but the melody, the instrumentation, and the way Tori plays with her voice make The Wrong Band worthy of engaging the “repeat” button.
