Clyde in Syracuse NY: Tori Amos Concert Review
One day very soon I will be writing my own Tori Amos American Doll Posse concert review. Until then I will rely on local newspaper journalists…
According to one Mark Bialczak, Tori Amos did not fail to please at the Landmark Theater in Syracuse New York on Saturday, October 13th 2007. And neither did Clyde…the doll who opened the show. According to this writer (who had not completely familiarized himself with the ADP cover art or concept, as he did not know Clyde was Clyde), Tori’s audience ran the gamut from tweeny boppers to women in their 40s and everything and everyone in between. This is an interesting observation–journalists rarely comment on Tori audience, other than to comment how rabid we are. That older Toriphiles are bringing their daughters to Tori shows…LOVE it!
Obligatory negative stuff: Dude didn’t like the loudness of the event or the seizure-inducing light show. He was impressed with Tori’s skills at the ivories, though, and her vocal range. Most journalists are. He was also of the opinion that the Tori doll was just more energetic than Clyde…which makes sense given that Tori is, well, Tori and Clyde is the subdued, vulnerable, introspective one. Clyde’s setlist did include Rattlesnakes and Roosterspur Bridge, afterall…compared to Tori’s Taxi Ride, Big Wheel, Spark, and Cornflake Girl.
Tori, reflecting on one of her finer moments in life, told the Syracuse audience that she was sorry that they were all missing their homecoming parties and that they shouldn’t worry, because they were there to see a former homecoming queen! Yep, in addition to being voted most talented and most likely to succeed in high school, Myra Ellen Amos was homecoming queen! I keep forgetting that interesting tidbit.
Tres cool…this is the first I’ve heard mention of Yoav’s (Tori’s opener) performance. Mr. Bialczak refers to the solo, guitar-playing, sound-looping, South African singer as “silky,” “trippy” and “folk-hop.” He also compares the young up-and-comer with Timbaland and Bob Dylan. I admit my curiosity is piqued! Can’t wait to hear the guy, although with the guitar looping stuff, he’s sounding an awful lot like Howie Day to me…who is one of my all time favorite Tori Amos openers.

Uh, it would have been so easy for this writer to have made a connection between the Greek goddesses who inspired ADP and the fact that she was playing in Syracuse (a Greek city). But, alas, he didn’t do all of his homework. Hey, I’m a critics critic, what can I say?
