Isabel Fights for Justice in D.C.: Tori Amos Concert Review

Isabel opened in D.C.I would have bet my life’s savings that Isabel, our favorite political activist, would “open up” at Tori Amos’ D.C. show. I’ll be darned if I wasn’t right. If she sang loud enough, perhaps George Bush actually heard her sing “Yo George” (not that it would do any good). Izzy did soften up a bit this show, singing Scarlet’s Walk, and In the Springtime of His Voodoo. However, the much anticipated Dark Side of the Sun did not make an appearance.

Folks on the Tori Amos forums receiving texts from concert goers report that both Izzy and Tori were “fierce,” but most were disappointed in the setlist, as it offered nothing new for the seasoned Tori Amos concert goer. You’ll always get a sneer or two whenever Leather is played. Despite set list complaints, Tori’s performance was as spot-on and entertaining as ever–the Dr. and Mrs. Amos got to catch a glimpse of their daughter grabbing her crotch during Pancake. Can we say awkward? But in a good way of course. (They do still come to her D.C. shows, don’t they?)

The highlight of the evening appears to be the hauntingly beautiful improv before Bells for Her. She also mentioned something about having played at a place “just down the street.”  Amos grew up in the D.C. area and frequently played D.C. dives in an attempt to boost her music career.  This blogger is excited to see Concertina, Pancake, and 1,000 oceans on the setlist. And whats this I hear about people rushing the stage after Code Red (the last song before the encores)? Does this happen a lot? Crowd surfing to Hey Jupiter?

These reviews have been quite cursory…if the Post has anything interesting to say tomorrow a.m., I’ll append. Until then, I’ll save up all of my energy for writing a review for a show I’m actually going to! Louisville, Row EE baby!

Update: The Washington Blade Online, a D.C. news and entertainment blog posted a lengthy review of the D.C. show (written by Joey DiGuglielmo).  I can’t really tell if this guy liked the show or not–there are an equal number of disses and praises.  Click here to read this post.
