Izzy in Fort Myers: Tori Amos Concert Review

Izzy in Fort MyersIzzy-hater Victoria Macchi had the esteemed pleasure of reviewing Tori Amos’ concert in Fort Myers, Florida on November 17, 2007. Some people just don’t get it, do they?  Come ON people, Tori Amos has explained the ADP concept in, like, 400 different interviews. Weren’t you listening? I mean, geez, I know you aren’t a fan…just an entertainment journalist, but don’t you all do research anymore? Look, its not that hard. Women in the twenty-first century are segregated from parts of themselves and Tori is showing us these parts via these archetypal woman. These are not “alter egos,” they are well-thought out political statements.

To be fair, this reviewer didn’t have a problem with the concept pe se. Instead, she found Isabel’s performance lack luster, uncommunicative, cocky and dare I say, boring. She referred to Izzy’s lamp as corny and found her whole set uninspiring. Well…here’s the bit (as Tori would say). Everything Tori Amos does on this tour MUST be interpreted through the ADP concept. Isabel is not the performer. Pip, Santa, and to some extent, Tori, are the performers. Through Isabel, Tori is capturing the part of a woman that can be serious, political-minded, and contemplative without being up-in-your-face, “look at me, look at me” about it. Ms. Macchi is proving Tori Amos’ point perfectly. Can’t a woman sit at a piano and tell serious, thought provoking stories in a somber, this-is-not-funny type of way and still garner praise? I think so. Especially, because Tori came out later and brought the “fun” side of music to the forefront. Music does have a serious side, and Isabel exemplifies that. THAT was the point. People, and not just this reviewer in particular, need to stop with the attention deficit and open their eyes to the art. In my humble opinion, of course. Smiley face.

Ms. Macchi loved her some Tori, so she is redeemed. But at the end she was left only describing the setlist and the drunk girls in the front row. (Do you have enough time to actually get that drunk at a Tori Amos show? Its only 3 hours long and drinks are so expensive, sheesh.) This setlist is found below and included Izzy’s fave Yo George, classics like Cornflake Girl and Sweet Dreams, and newbies like Big Wheel and Suede. Seaside and Silent certainly made for a beautiful T & Bo. And tonight’s show welcomed Mountain to the gang’s repertoire. I hear Mountain is worth the entire cost of this show’s boot.

  1. I am SO HAPPY I found this site - I check it several times a day. I love your reviews and I love how you think. I too have been quite disappointed with many of the reveiws of the Dolls/Tori’s performances. Why don’t these people get it? It’s a good thing they don’t get it though, because if we all got Tori, she wouldn’t be the Goddess she is :-)

  2. You are the NICEST person ever, Jenn! Seriously…I am so disappointed in journalists these days. Most journalists were English majors in school, so why don’t they see the metaphor? Thanks again for your support! You motivate me to keep on truckin!

  3. I read Victoria Macchi’s review, but the words didn’t really come through, all I read was “blah blah blah” ;)

Oh well. WE know the truth, don’t we girls :)

  4. It was def. all about the blah!

We who seeketh the truth, know the truth, you are right Inge, he he he.
