Montreal Concert Review: Critic not a fan of Isabel

Isabel opened in MontrealBut he likes Tori, so I only half hate him :)

Isabel opened up the Montreal show, cigarette in hand with a f**k you attitude–and the local newspaper critic didn’t like it one bit. T’cha Dunlevy used the word “disappointing” and admitted that Isabel was “shamed” after Tori came on stage and performed her set. Poor Isabel. Although I wasn’t there, I have a hard time believing that a set list including Yo George, In the Springtime of his Voodoo, and Scarlet’s Walk would be anything but stellar. The political, the truth seekers, the observers, and the sexy blondes are often misunderstood, I’m sure she will brush it off.

Tori’s set included the usual Big Wheel, Bouncing, and Cornflake Girl which were spiced up by Sugar, Spark, Code Red, and (my personal fave and I hope to God she plays it in Louisville) Garlands. The Izzy-hater, who although he referred to the “concept” obviously didn’t get the “concept,” was much more kind to the red-wigged Tori Amos, referring to her as exuberant, fun, funky, and coy.

Her improv he describes makes me happy–its so typically Tori. She sang a little diddy about how much she loves French people after commenting to the audience that she has really, really wanted to play Montreal. Tori sure knows how to draw in a crowd, doesn’t she? Flattery always works!

After all is said and done, I bet there were no complaints from the rest of the audience about either Isabel’s or Tori’s performance. We love her antics, the new and the old, and would probably embrace her still if she shaved her head and came on stage barefoot…which is more than a lot of musicians can say about their fans.

Here is the complete setlist:

(Tori…if you are listening/reading, which I’m sure you are not but hey, its worth a try, I’ll pay cash money to hear you sing Garlands in Louisville. We are talking serious fundage her. It’ll put Tash through to Oxford, I sweartogod.)
