Pip Feels the Love in Toronto: Tori Amos Concert Review

Pip played Toronto 10-23-07Torontonians (Torontonians? Is that right?) got themselves a dose of the ass-shakin’, middle-finger saluting, Dark Lord Pip last night at the Sony Theater.

A review in the Toronto Star refers to Pip’s performance as naughty and banshee-like–yep, that’s our Pip alright, ready to kick your butt and hit the high notes at the same time. She decided to compliment her black rubber pants with her green dress this time, which is one of my personal faves. Her set list included Cruel, Bliss, Smokey Joe, and Teenage Hustling (among others). According to the Toronto Sun, the intensity of these songs landed Pip on the floor, using the piano bench as a sort of stripper pole. Thats a new one, at least for this fan.

The author of the Sun article, Jason MacNeil, complained about the length of the costume change. How long does it usually last, anyway? I’ve been quite curious (although I’ll find out in 4 days!!!).

Tori came out eventually, though, ready to belt out classics like Cornflake Girl, Winter, Horses, and Hey Jupiter and some newbies: Code Red, Bouncing off Clouds, and Big Wheel. An “A Piano” joint called Take Me With You made an unexpected appearance and I’ll forever be jealous of Torontonians (seriously, what are you guys called?) because of it. A complete set list is below.

Both Tori and Pip held the audience in awe. As one critic put it: “It’s just that during the tunes, few feet, heads, or lips moved. Why so serious, folks?” Because its Tori Amos. To quote Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “Does the world ‘Duh’ mean anything to you?” While we love to see our Tori in all of her angsty, funny, entertaining, and endearing glory, we come for the music. The lyrics. They touch us at a level most pop stars only dream of. Thats why the solemnity, bud.

The improv sounds delightful–a tale of a mother/daughter book shopping trip ending in laughs and insight in just how smart of a cookie Tash is turning out to be. Not much else was said, according to one reviewer. Just a simple, “Eat me” after an obnoxious “I love you, Tori” and an obligatory comment on how happy she was to be in Toronto. She is much preferring to sing these days, rather than talk it seems. I’d like a little story every now and then, though. You?
