Pip Pippin’ in Salt Lake City: Tori Amos Concert Review
And who said red states and Tori Amos don’t mix?
Pip wowed her inspiration-thirsty Salt Lake City audience with all of her faves: Heart of Gold, Cruel, Fat Slut, and Waitress to name a few. She rocked the green dress and, of course, the infamous leather pants. (Hm…wouldn’t it be funny to hear Pip sing Leather? Nah, so un-Pip. But it would make us giggle.) Fans refer to Pip’s set as feral and empowering and allude to an improv during Cruel in which she chanted something along the lines of, “You think you can f**k her. You think you can shame her. You think the Goddess is okay with this.” These are the moments bootlegs are made of.
I hear Tori donned the its-not-gaudy-because-Tori-is-wearing-it cheetah-fit again, skipped on stage and seemed truly joyful and thankful to be playing in such a beautiful city. She addressed the audience briefly and sincerely, saying something to the effect of “We love coming here and we had a great day here. You people are magical and it is such a pleasure and privilege to play for you.” Wow. What grace.
Tori’s setlist included the usuals (i.e. Big Wheel, Cornflake Girl, Bouncing off Clouds, Code Red, and Precious Things). Some highlights included Pretty Good Year, Caught a Lite Sneeze, and Amber Waves. Salt Lake City Ears with Feet were treated to both Mother and Merman during T & Bo. Mother! How great! I wonder why she broke that oldie but goodie out? I hear Merman was per fan request. This is why we love her! Such generosity and caring. Someone needed to hear Merman and she whipped it out.
The only complaints about the entire show revolve around obnoxious audience members in various stages of drunkeness either screaming at inappropriate times or singing along very, very, very loudly. I can’t say I haven’t screamed a time or two at a Tori show…or laughed with my outside voice when T. said something particularly hilarious. But I reserve most of my annoying verbalizations for after-song applause. 98% of the rest of the audience does to. Why do some people insist on getting air time? We came to hear Tori, not you, yo. Most people come to Tori shows for a spiritual experience, even for healing. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Alls I gotsta say. You can still get your drink on and have fun without spoiling the moment for those around you.
Anyway…congrats Salt Lake City. Looks like you were the recipient of another class-act Tori Amos concert!
