Tori Amos at Madison Square Garden: Venue Review

WaMu Theater at MSGAs if there needs to be formal review of Madison Square Garden. But because I feel a moral imperative to carry on a review series to its completion I will trudge on. That, and this is one of the more famous venues Tori Amos will play this tour, so it does deserve some time in the spotlight. Tori will play Madison Square Garden on October 11th (Thursday) and October 12th (Friday). Tickets are still out there, so gobble yours up quickly!

Location: Madison Square Garden, or “The Garden,” or “World’s Most Famous Arena” is located on Seventh Avenue between 31st and 33rd streets in New York City. Actually, Tori Amos is playing the WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden, which is a part of the larger arena. Hey, if you are interested in staying around New York after the show…The 2007 Cat Championship will be held at MSG on the 13th. Hey, just thought I’d let you know.

Some History: And by “some” I mean “some,” because you could write a master’s thesis on the history of Madison Square Garden. The MSG we know and love today is really the fourth MSG (kind of reminds me of the Dread Pirate Roberts, please tell me you get this). The first one, established in 1879 met its end 10 years later. The second one opened a year later. In an obsessive quest for perfection a third one was built and opened in 1925…christened by a hocky game. The modern Manhattan-based MSG opened in 1968 with the ribbon cut by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. MSG has welcomed the likes of Elvis, Muhammad Ali, John Lennon, the Pope, and…of course, Myra Ellen “Tori” Amos.

Appearance/Size: Appears to have a stadium-like feel…not as intimate as some of the smaller venues. But, the more Toriphiles the better, so its sure to be an amazingly beautiful show regardless.

How Website Introduces Tori: The WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden is not as personal with its announcement as Albany’s Palace was, but they at least refer to her breakthrough success with Little Earthquakes and address her role in “rejuvenating” the world’s interest in female singer/songwriters. They refer to her Grammy nominations (oh, please) and Piece by Piece and describe her as the “most intriguing and respected” artists of our time (here, here). They announce Yoav and do not go into detail about the ADP concept or the appearance of various “dolls.”

Has Tori Amos Played Here Before?: A couple of times…Tori stopped by MSG on her Dew Drop Inn and Plugged ‘98 tours.
