Tori Reaches out to Britney
Okay, maybe I underestimated Tori when I said that she’d be frustrated with Britney (and those like her) for turning the back the clock as far as women earning respect from the music industry. It appears she is much more sympathetic (although we aren’t surprised…her being one of the most compassionate people on the planet)…although I guess she can be frustrated and kind at the same time. Perez Hilton reports that, during her 9-11-07 show in Melbourne, Australia, Tori opined about Britney’s woes in the typical “live” Tori way…via musical improv.
In the improv, Tori empathizes with Brit both as a mother and a famous singer. She accuses the industry of setting her up just so they can watch (and profit from) her fall. Tori admits that she herself, even though she is a mother, still needs her mother’s help on occassion…and might Britney need a mother to help her as well?
Tori Amos, like Britney Spears, knows what it is like to be hyped up by the music industry and then taken advantage of or otherwise manipulated…so her empathy is earnest. In the Y Kant Tori Read days, Atlantic records pressured Tori into completely altering her persona to attract, um, a certain kind of attention (i.e. not on her piano skills). After her debut, the press tore her up, referring to her as a “bimbo” (yep, we all still cringe, even though we’ve read that quote a zillion times) with no backing from her Atlantic representatives. When Tori decided to go off and do her own thing, they were suspicious…that is, until she started making them money. But when she wanted to take some time off after her third miscarriage, they didn’t give her a break from her promotion schedule. Because that is all they care about. Making money.
MTV and the like seem to be making as much money dissing Britney as they did from her success. Either that or, as Tori says in her improv, her contract must be running up. Our Tori never misses a metaphor, analogy, allegory or correlation, does she?
As Tori would say, she and Britney need to sit down and have a good glass of Corton-Charlemagne
