Bliss

Bliss by Tori Amos

Lyrics, Music and Commentary by Tori Amos

“Bliss was filmed on the road at the very end of a very long tour. The video crew had been out with us for a few days. And I think this was a time of reflection for some and sadness for others. This was a time when the band and I were on the same bus together. We had all grown very close. I had chosen to be with musicians as far as playing together, and working together, and living together on the same bus. Which is a choice you actually have to do consciously when you’re very used to being out there on your own. God, I feel like breaking into that Ivory Castle. But bonds were bing formed and friendships..day in day out. That I think was um deep this was the plugged tour so I guess in a way this is where from acoustic piano, harpsichord, to being plugged in with the band…you know, it was a huge shift.”

“Lilith fair was going on, usually in the same town that we were in. And we were in arenas, plugged in, rocking the house. And I think both messages were extremely important because it was different aspects of the feminine.”

“Um, John Witherspoon, Spoony, had come out to be with us on the road who is now my manager along with Chelsea. And he is the type of person who…you know when things are at their worst, when there are tears…people don’t know what to say because, let’s face it, you’re saying goodbye to some of the closest people to you. And he’s just at his best when everyone else is kind of struggling.”

“I guess this is kind of a celebration. You know, making the record together, the rehearsals…it was a two years process. We were never without each other, from the bus to the hotel to the stage. So I guess the end was like four directions being pulled apart. In our own tiny little world. So when I see this I remember a time of beauty and love and decadence.”
